OCEAN’S ongoing commitment to the environment is helping people in Brazil take a leading role in protecting rainforest and wildlife.

The “invaluable support” Ocean has given the World Land Trust — a U.K-based charity that helps protect threatened habitats around the globe — has enabled their local conservation partner in Brazil to engage people over the future of the country’s Atlantic Rainforest.

The REGUA (Reserve Ecologica de Guapi Assu) Reserve in the coastal state of Rio de Janeiro in south eastern Brazil is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is home to hundreds of species of birds and mammals.

The Reserve is patrolled by 10 dedicated rangers who work for REGUA to guarantee the protection of the reserve areas. These rangers are mainly from the local villages of Guapiaçu or Matumbo and patrol the reserve to prevent poaching and habitat destruction.

REGUA also runs an education programme with the communities that surround the reserve on the importance of the natural environment. The project works with local schools, linking environmental issues with other parts of the education system.

Ocean’s donations to the World Land Trust have contributed to the purchase and protection of almost 1,700 acres of Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.

A report on the REGUA Reserve by the WLT stated: “This invaluable support has helped the protection of critically threatened habitats.”
